Created by former World Cup soccer star Jay DeMerit, Rise & Shine: Captains Camps are more than just your typical sports camp.
Unwavering self-belief, respect, work ethic, positivity and the importance of establishing a multifaceted skillset -- both on and off the field are just a few of the pillars that this camp is built on.
When Jay turned professional in 2004, he enjoyed a 10+ year career in both the English Championship and the English Premiership as captain of Watford FC. Jay's career highlights also include representing the United States as a member of the National team for more than five years, playing a key role in the 2009 Confederations Cup Final and in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he was on the pitch for every minute of every game. Jay finished his career in 2014 as captain of the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS.
Jay is known as a true captain -- a leader on and off the field -- and he is passionate about sharing his experience in sport and in life. Jay's next ambition is to create inspiring leaders for the future, not just soccer stars. Captains Camps are held at the Rise & Shine Retreat, in Pemberton, BC, Canada. The ground-breaking mentorship program offers strategically curated presentations from a wide array of difference-makers; role-models who are carefully selected to inspire kids to consider a variety of paths to success, even beyond the soccer field.
About Captains Camps
Every kid should have dreams and aspirations they can believe in, whether they are sport-focused or related to other passions; for arts, music, academic studies, health & wellness... the sky is the limit.
As former professional athletes, Rise & Shine: Captains Camps founders Ashleigh and Jay DeMerit recognize the valuable life lessons and sense of empowerment that can come from sports and recreation. Most importantly, they appreciate the contribution sports make to overall emotional, mental, and physical health -- in order to create ambitious, happy members of society. Participation and engagement in sports can be a very powerful in helping youth gear up for real life. Even beyond sports and recreation, this is about pursuing passions, and leading a well-rounded, healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.
At Captains Camps, we are providing youth with opportunities to improve their athletic skills through a variety of sports and activities, while teaching them how to grow into successful adults. We focus on important life skills like cooking & nutrition, public speaking, social media best practices, and unique strategies for dealing with team dynamics and coaching staff. Participants go on adventures in the wilderness and then sit down by a bonfire for discussions on leadership, or for other character-building exercises.
This is an all-encompassing life-skills camp. It is more than just a sports camp. The program will create high-functioning, contributing members of society. Participants will leave with their eyes wide open to their true potential, and with a strong drive and ambition to be the best version of themselves that they could ever be.
They will be socially responsible.
They will be confident.
They will be motivated.
They will be leaders.
We are enabling more kids to Rise & Shine.
Rise & Shine Success Stories
We want to make sure that every kid has the opportunity to take part in our program, so we have created the Rise & Shine Foundation -- our fundraising vehicle to enable those who would not have the resources to sign up to join in -- with the help of our favourite supporters and various fundraising initiatives.
Please visit our donations page if you would like to sponsor a camper!
Let's Be Inclusive
Let's Be Inclusive
Part of the Rise & Shine project is focussed on creating a strong sense of community. Jay grew up in the tight knit community of Green Bay, WI and Ashleigh was raised on the spirited family values of the ski town, Whistler, BC. It is important to them to help enrich their communities, and the two of them look forward to doing that in Pemberton for the entire surrounding area. Whether it is using the food from the farms produced next door, running free clinics in sport for the local kids, or promoting local businesses, community is key.
The other key ingredient when it comes to community, is the curation of a platform to promote ongoing engagement between community members -- in this case, Captains Camps alumni. Through our facebook page, kids are able to keep in touch with one another and access valuable resources, including coaches and mentors on an ongoing basis.
Community is Key
"...truly life changing."
"I learned not only how to be a better soccer player, but to be a better leader and person."
-Max, 2016 camper
"brilliant both on/off the pitch. Incredible to see the players develop so much in just a few days. I was sad to say goodbye and am still in touch with some of the group now. "

About the Venue: Have you ever found yourself facing such breathtaking scenery that —once you’ve caught your breath— you feel energized… and inspired… and empowered?
The Rise & Shine Retreat sits at the base of majestic 8,501 ft Mount Currie and 2016 marked the beginning of a new way to train for youth soccer. Plans to develop the property over the next two years are in motion, and in the meantime, camps are operated out of Jay & Ashleigh's tiny little cabin, with a deck that is 3 times the size of the indoor space! Kids camp-out on site. (see below)
More About Captains Camps:
Led by US International/former Watford FC/Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit, Rise & Shine: Captains Camps will be much more than your typical soccer camp.
A captain is an individual who unifies teammates into one team. A captain has to be well-rounded to lead by example.
At the Rise & Shine: Captains Camps, the curriculum is specifically built around creating a balance of elite soccer training on the field, and all-encompassing life-skills training off the field, with a strong emphasis on leadership.
Participants enjoy nutrition education through hands-on cooking classes and preparation of meals, and they'll get their creative juices flowing by designing and building their own training equipment! (Jay also has a degree in Industrial Design and is eager to share those practical, creative skills!)
On the soccer side, Jay teams up with former professionals to make sure all of the coaches' experiences can be passed on to each player.
Strong mentorship is a vital component in the Rise & Shine mentality, so we will also be bringing other mentors in to the camp from doctors to designers, and entrepreneurs, to some of the world's best athletes from other sports.
TOGETHER, we can achieve more and build better leaders for tomorrow!
Accommodation & Meals:
Accommodation is be on-site! Participants each have a comfy twin bed, “glamping” (glamorous camping) in a 10’ x 10’ outfitter tent, shared with one other camper. There will be nice washroom trailers, several outdoor showers, and laundry service will be provided.
Meals will be prepared and enjoyed at the DeMerits’ cabin by an incredible private chef.
Have a look at the photos below!
This is a unique opportunity to be part of something special from the beginning as the Rise & Shine Retreat is set to blossom into a high-end, world class facility over the next few years. Development plans include a large barn to serve as the camp headquarters, a bunkhouse and sleeping cabins for kids, coaches, and mentors, as well as a spectacular spa area for physio and treatment.
Join us this summer as we “rough it” on the retreat grounds and lay the foundation for an enriching sports and leadership program that you can be proud to have become part of in its infancy!
